Senior guys don’t usually wake up thinking, “I can’t wait for my photo session.”
I get it.
Cooper’s senior photos took place over two weekends — one in the dramatic landscape of Badlands National Park and one along Spring Creek Trail near Rapid City in the Black Hills. Two totally different backdrops. Two different energies. Both very him.

Weekend One: Badlands Senior Photos
The Badlands bring scale. Texture. Big sky.
For teen boys especially, wide open spaces help. There’s room to move. Room to stand tall. Room to not feel like every second is a close-up.
We kept things simple:
Pro tip for Badlands senior photos: wind is part of the deal. Lean into it. It adds movement and keeps things from feeling stiff. I also think the Badlands are a great place to showcase a favorite vehicle or activity in a unique way.

Weekend Two: Spring Creek Trail | Rapid City, SD
The second session felt more grounded. Pine trees. Filtered light. That classic Black Hills backdrop.
Spring Creek Trail is one of my favorite spots for Rapid City senior photos because it feels natural and easy. Nothing overly posed. Just walking, leaning, sitting, talking.
For teen guys, this matters.
They don’t want to feel over-directed. They don’t want forced smiles. They definitely don’t want to look “posed.”
Tips for Senior Photos with Teen Boys
If you’re planning senior pictures for your son in the Black Hills or Badlands, here’s what helps:
No big logos. No trendy graphics they’ll regret in five years.
Stick with neutrals, texture, and clean layers.
Walking shots. Adjusting a jacket. Looking off-camera.
Teen boys relax when they’re doing something instead of standing frozen.
Break up sessions across a few days into shorter sessions in unique locations. They won’t feel so overwhelmed!
Quiet? Cool.
Talkative? Great.
Athletic? Bring it in naturally — no awkward “hold this football and grin.”
