This extended session took place on a beautiful fall afternoon at Sylvan Lake, in Custer State Park.
Planning a family reunion can feel a bit like herding cats—lots of moving parts, plenty of opinions, and endless logistics. But choosing the right destination can make all the difference, transforming a complicated event into a memorable, joy-filled gathering. That’s exactly why the Black Hills of South Dakota are the perfect place for your next family reunion.
Why the Black Hills?
This fun candid was from a fall family reunion near Mt. Rushmore.
From the iconic views of Mount Rushmore to the tranquil shores of Sylvan Lake, the Black Hills offer something for every generation. The region effortlessly combines adventure, relaxation, and plenty of room to roam—essential ingredients for a successful reunion.
Here are a few reasons the Black Hills stand out:
Natural Beauty: Picture your family gathering beneath towering Ponderosa pines, hiking scenic trails, or enjoying a picnic beside stunning mountain lakes. Nature brings people together, and there’s no shortage of breathtaking views in the Black Hills.
Activities for Everyone: Whether your family loves outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking or prefers sightseeing and exploring historical sites, the Black Hills cater to all ages and interests.
Convenient Accommodations: From cozy cabins and vacation homes to campgrounds and hotels, there are lodging options suited to every family’s style and budget.
Tips for Planning Your Reunion:
Set the Date Early: The Black Hills are popular, especially in summer, so locking down your dates in advance helps ensure availability for accommodations and activities. I highly recommend booking at least a year in advance. Avoid the first two weeks of August as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is in the Black Hills. Not only are roads more congested, but prices skyrocket.
Create an Activity Balance: Plan structured group activities but also leave ample downtime. Include a mix of hikes, sightseeing tours, games, and plenty of relaxation.
Meal Planning: Consider group-friendly meals, from BBQs at rental homes to local dining experiences at family-friendly restaurants. Assign meals or catering responsibilities to different family units.
Group Lodging Options:
Cabin Rentals: Ideal for larger families looking to stay together. Check out locations like Black Hills Cabin Rentals or Sylvan Lake Lodge for options that combine comfort and nature.
Vacation Homes & VRBOs: Perfect for families who want shared communal spaces and amenities like kitchens, yards, and outdoor gathering areas. My favorite rental neighborhood is at Powder House Pass, just outside of Lead, SD. The homes are gorgeous and have a ton of amenities, and you’re just a few minutes from Deadwood.
Campgrounds & RV Parks: For families who love the outdoors, places like Custer State Park Campgrounds and Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch offer camping and RV-friendly amenities with lots of room to spread out and lots of different lodging types, from tent sites, cabins, and RV spots.
Hotels & Resorts: Options like the Lodge at Deadwood or Rapid City’s hotels provide convenience, comfort, and easy access to local attractions.
I love the Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch. The park has lots of types of lodging and SO much for kids to do, from trail rides, ATVS rides, to a giant play structure, and great pool, all overlooking Black Elk Wilderness.
Book a Photographer—Yes, Really!
With all the effort and planning that goes into a family reunion, it’s essential to preserve those memories. Hiring a professional photographer means everyone gets to enjoy the moment without worrying about taking pictures. A photographer will capture candid interactions, the joy on your faces during activities, and those priceless group photos that become family heirlooms.
Look for a photographer who specializes in lifestyle photography, someone who can embrace the beautiful chaos of extended family dynamics. The right photographer will blend seamlessly into your gathering, documenting authentic moments of laughter, connection, and love. I recommend reaching out 3-4 months in advance of your vacation.
If you’re hosting your reunion in the Black Hills, let’s chat—I’d love to document your family’s special moments amid one of the most beautiful landscapes South Dakota has to offer. Together, we’ll create lasting memories that your family will cherish for generations to come. Inquire here to start planning your session!
